We are doing a cruise around the coast of Spain and Portugal ending in Lisbon. We will have a couple-three days before flying home to the states. The question is: Stay in Lisbon or head over to Madrid for more exploring....?
I know we would have to either fly or do an overnight train to Madrid from Lisbon.....
Thanks in advance...
Lisbon! Lovely place.
Both are great locations. If you choose Lisbon, be sure to do a day trip to Sintra
Even if you must be in Madrid to fly home, Lisbon's a far more interesting city with much more history. You'll have to fly to Madrid from Lisbon. The only reason to skip Lisbon would be if you adore European painting and want to spend those days in the great art museums there.
We've been to Lisbon for cruises, and on a Portugal-only independent land trip. It is a lovely visit, but you must allow for how isolated it is from even Madrid. Direct flights between Lisbon and the US are not very numerous, and sell out early, at slightly higher prices. So make your plans carefully. I happen to love Madrid, so it's not a "second choice." But if you have not stayed in Lisbon, you certainly should consider it.
Madrid is great but since you'd already be in Lisbon stay there and enjoy it instead of worrying about the logistics of getting to Madrid. Plus Lisbon is such a beautiful city!
