Lisbon/Sintra at Christmas

Hi all,

We are working on rescheduling our trip to Lisbon. This is with our young adult kids (20s/30s) and for about one week. Looks like Lisbon had a mild December in 2022 weather-wise so am hoping for the same in 2023.

I woud love any feedback from anyone who has traveled to Lisbon in December. It seems as though all museums and palaces are open except Christmas and New Years Day! We love art, churches, architecture. Not sure how much cafe sitting we will be able to do.

I don’t see any reason to stay in Sintra given it is off season and I don’t think it will have the crowds, right?

Not sure we will take a day trip to Evora since we only have one week. Maybe a hike in the Sintra - Cascais Natural Park one day.

Any ideas for New Years Eve?

Thanks in advance for any input.

The weather in December is pretty unpredictable.. 2022 saw huge amounts of rain with significant flooding, but that’s not normal. You could potentially have several days when coffee and lunches outside would be doable. Just impossible to predict.

Sintra is crowded year round!

New Years Eve is a time for fireworks all over the area. Lisbon has a big display but the smaller towns do, too. Book way ahead for a restaurant, though.

Seconding the notion that December weather is fairly unpredictable. I was in Lisbon from Dec. 18-24, 2021 (not last year). The first two days were around 60 degrees with abundant sunshine -- absolutely perfect -- but the next four days were very rainy with only brief bursts of sun (but also not much in the way of total downpours--fine to be out most of the time with a light jacket). Alas, this was 2021 in the height of the Omicron outbreak and I was extremely averse to doing anything indoors because I had to pass a COVID test to get back to the US, but Lisbon has plenty of great museums, aquariums, shopping, food halls, etc., that could help fill a rainy day. There were almost no tourists when I visited (but, again, COVID), and I had the Sao Jorge Castle and much of the Cascais-Estorial boardwalk without any crowds at all. I personally think it's still a nice time to visit. Prices are a little lower and the weather is still likely better than most places in the US, although maybe not California, where it looks like you are from.

For what it's worth, I saw Sintra on a separate visit in May 2018, and we had a wonderful time with a guide who drove us to Sintra and then Cabo da Roca, handling all of the ticketing and prearrangements. I will add, though, that people I know who have gone since have found it to be fairly miserable. It seems like they haven't found a way to adapt to the maddening crowds visiting. You could perhaps consider Evora in place of Sintra. I found Cascais to be an absolute delight, and it's only a 40-minute scenic train ride along the river/ocean from Cais do Sodre station in Lisbon.

Hope this helps... Bottom line on the weather is you just don't know, especially in December.

Thanks Kathryn!

I think Southern Spain has warmer dryer weather but with only one week, we just can’t do the area justice unless we simply spend 5 nights in Sevilla then December 30 & 31 in Madrid before flying home. Sigh…

Lisbon actually seems like a perfect destination for a week if the weather cooperates!

Thanks for your response Blake.

We definitely want a destination with museums, churches, castles because we expect the weather to be cool and somewhat wet. We were in Paris and Florence that same year (October) and were surprised how cold and rainy it was.

Hi Calimom,

As Portuguese i can say that December is usually cold in Portugal, but not that extreme cold as France or upper countries.

For museums as far as i know is all opened, you can see all Lisbon center churches in 1 day and look for Berardo art on Belem.

Regarding Sintra will be very low populated, great time to see it, but there indeed is cooler.

As for Evora i would indeed pass by, as you have roman temples and the Portuguese Stonehenge there, its 1,5h from Lisbon, great gastronomy.

On the new year contact your hotel, or check by earlier, to register to a good hotel new year night with dinner and private party, not insecure on the streets but not the best night to be out, else if you are on the "baixa" zone or "praça do comércio" for fireworks at midnight.
