Lisbon: Should I stay in Alfama or in the modern downtown Baixa district?

In reading Rick's guide, he doesn't cover lodging in the Alfama though restaurants and walking tour are covered. Is it just too steep and inconvenient? I'm wondering is it safe/advisable for a single woman to stay in the Alfama alone in a hostel? It sounds like a magical, authentic, colorful place. Feedback welcome. I will be leaving on the 14th of December. Any additional comments welcome...favorite must not miss experiences, etc....but the lodging issue is most pressing. Thank you!

If you find a reasonable place in the Alfama, I don't see any reason not to stay there. There is a trolley that goes up the main road so climbing uphill isn't too much of an issue. The Baixa is more central for seeing sights and catching various transit, and for restaurants, but the Alfama has more "character." Other than taking reasonable precautions when traveling alone, I don't think you should be too worried about the Alfama.
