Hi travelers! I am planning a trip to Portugal next month, and I'm looking to explore less touristy areas of Lisbon and Porto on foot. Any hidden gems I should check out? I want to avoid the main shopping and nightlife parts of town and spend my time on quiet streets with sidewalk cafes, parks, winding streets, etc. Thank you!
Commenting to follow this thread. We'll be in Lisbon and Porto in September. One area I'm eyeballing for a walk one day is near Principe Real. I honestly don't know if it fits your bill but it looks pretty. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Pr%C3%ADncipe+Real/@38.7158807,-9.1481855,3a,75y,61.92h,79.89t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sstj-8vX7yoBjXIaUWGXGaA!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3Dstj-8vX7yoBjXIaUWGXGaA%26cb_client%3Dsearch.gws-prod.gps%26w%3D211%26h%3D120%26yaw%3D273.84814%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i16384!8i8192!4m6!3m5!1s0xd19337f05bbf8a5:0xeb12fa28c0b10331!8m2!3d38.71589!4d-9.14828!16s%2Fg%2F11dzszm_fz?entry=ttu

At the top is neighborhoods. When you click on an individual neighborhood, it gives a nice description with pictures.
Here is the one for Principe Real, as mentioned by Allan. There’s a botanical garden there that I plan to check out.

I leave for Portugal next week, with 8 nights in Lisbon. So, plenty of time to explore some of the less touristy areas. Keep an eye out for my trip report as I’ll be reporting back.
Have you considered taking a walking food tour?
My introduction to Lisbon (2019 October) began less than a hour after our arrival from Bilbao. Our daughters gifted a food tour which began in Rossio Square. Fortunately, the square was only a 10 minute walk from our rented apartment.
During this introduction to Lisbon and also to Portuguese cuisine, we sampled traditional delicious examples of local delights as we made our way around town. Our daughters claimed this tour was not expensive and I suspect there are numerous opportunities for similar tours, today.
