I am planning to do a Portugal and Morroco trip, with a multi city ticket from ORD-LIS outbound, and RAK-ORD on the return. On the return from RAK, I have an overnight layover in Lisbon. Will I need to collect my bags or will they be checked through to final destination? Would you advise doing this all on one ticket like this, or is it better to have a separate ticket from Marrakesh to Lisbon, then international from Lisbon to ORD? Can't decide which is the best way to do it. Thanks for tips.

If the overnight in Lisbon is due to the airline’s schedule - very long layover - your bags will be checked through to ORD. If you want the overnight in Lisbon and the fare is better, I would likely go with that. If you get two tickets, be sure to allow for plenty of time in Lisbon to pick up bags, recheck, go through passport control ( which can take a long time), etc.
