Hi everyone - My husband and I are visiting Lisbon for the first time. We plan to do each of the neighborhood walks (Alfama, Baixa, Bairro Alto/Chiado) outlined in Rick’s guidebook. How much time should we allow for each of the walks assuming that we are both very fit and enjoy walking but would like to take a somewhat leisurely pace? I tend to run around cities like my pants are on fire and have decided to take a slower approach this time around. Thank you for your feedback!
Depending on how speedily you want to mosey along, preferably on the slow side to ingest the flavor of the neighborhoods, I would say 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours without rushing. Stop, stare, absorb, have a drink, grab some street food, munch on a pastry. It’s a great, fun city.
We did all three on a port day stop from a cruise. We got off the ship first thing, took a taxi to the top (Castel) and headed downhill. We neither dawdled nor rushed, and had time for a coffee and pastry stop, a nice lunch, and some shopping while still returning to the ship in plenty of time.
That said, if I didn't have such a time constraint, I'd do one per day with a more leisurely pace and enter the various museums (we skipped them due to time).
Enjoy Lisbon - it far exceeded our already high expectations!
