I was told that there is a possibility of the museum closing for restoration work sometime in 2017. I couldn't find any information about this on the museum website. Has anybody else heard of this or know where I might find more information? I was hoping to visit it this spring.

The Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga recently opened a third floor. So I know that work was in progress recently, but the museum wasn't closed while they did the work. There are a number of email addresses on the website. You might try emailing them to ask. I haven't heard anything of it's closing for restoration but someone associated with the museum would be your best source.
