Lisbon Hotels

Has anyone stayed at the Hotel Alegria or the Hotel Portuence? They are hotels recommended by Rick. We won't be there until the end of Sept., but some that I was interested in are booked. I'm looking for a good location and under $300. TIA

I recently took the Rick Steves tour in Portugal. We stayed at this hotel:

MyStory Hotel Tejo
R. Condes de Monsanto 2
Tel: 011 351 218 866 182
Fax: + 011 351 218 865 163

I was happy with my room, the staff was friendly, and the location was very central. My extra two nights cost considerably less than $300 per night.

Just to mess things up, we stayed at the Hotel Avienda Palace (it is in Rick’s book) which was beautiful. It was a short walk to the waterside. They had a lovely breakfast. Our only complaint would be there was not a dedicated resaurant. They had a lounge with seating and low tables. There was a piano player and a few nights we had appetizers with drinks as our dinner.

Unfortunately, the Hotel Avenida Palace is $373/night when we will be there. I've been looking at My Story Tejo, too. It's about $290/night. The prices all go up when we will be there.

Hi Diane - I personally love Principe Real and Alfama, but Alfama isn't great if you have more limited mobility as it's even more hilly than the rest of the city! So if you're still deciding, here's a pretty comprehensive guide on where to stay in Lisbon, which covers most of the main areas, including Chiado, Baixa, Alfama, Bairro Alto, Principe Real, and Avenida da Liberdade (a big long posh shopping street!), with a focus on what makes each of those areas good for certain travellers. Hope it helps!

Diane,
Just off the main drag in PR is a great little hotel we stayed at. Check out 1869 Principe Real. Right around the corner is what we thought was the best restaurant in Lisbon the Merceria do Seculo.

I'm planning our extension onto the RST Best of Portugal tour in April 2027. The My Story Hotel Tejo (our scheduled tour stay) best room rate to extend our stay 3 days is 683 EUR per night as of May 7, 2026. The other MyStory hotels had likewise jacked up their rates for 2027. Still shopping for the hotel in the area.
