Lisbon Arts

Hi,
I’m hoping someone familiar with Lisbon could recommend galleries, interesting shops, murals, cafes with art, interesting architecture, open studios, or even design - graphic or otherwise. It might be a hidden gem most people overlook, gallery walk, artist meetup… Yes, many people like going to museums to tick off seeing a recommendation, but I’m a bit more passionate about art having quite a bit of an art, design and art history background. Anything “off the beaten track”?

Your comments are welcome. Thanks so much!

Lisbon has a lot of street art/graffiti which I happen to enjoy. Not sure if this is something that all would consider art though. https://www.lisbonlux.com/magazine/lisbon-street-art.html
Also, just look down. The designs created by how the cobblestones are placed is another form of art for Portugal. And the azulejos (tiles) on buildings are beautiful. Portugal has many amazing things to see just by walking and looking around.

Kathryn, if you also enjoy architecture, the fairly new museum in Belem called MAAT is wonderful. Here is the link.

Edited to add: it is closed on Tuesdays

I'm kind of the opposite of kathryn. I have no specific passion or background in art, in fact I'm not likely to visit a museum, even just to tick something off a list, but I like looking at interesting and pretty things and I loved the ideas mentioned so far. So much street art to see (not to mention the other helpful links within the article) and there's even a heart chakra meditation at the MAAT one of the days I'll be in Lisbon, so I might have to plan a visit that day. Thanks so much for the ideas!

Thanks Linda for the Tuesday warning.
Just found a cute coffee tea place called Casa São Miguel on Instagram. Keep them coming… book shops? Anything.

It's always worth simply Googling "Lisbon museums" and "Lisbon galleries" to see what pops up.

I believe there's a tile museum, and I'm a fan of the vey well-known Gulbenkian. I haven't been to Lisbon in decades and am not up on the newer stuff. I wonder whether the subway stations are worth visiting. I bet they're decorated with tiles.

@kathryndesign thanks for the tip about Casa Sao Miguel. I'll be in Lisboa in about three weeks and my AirBnB is only a few blocks away. It looks like a place I'd really enjoy.

@Linda MAAT looks really cool too!

And to add a few more.

  • Manueline architecture in Belém (suburb of Lisbon), Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower.
  • Monserrate, which is one of the least visited palaces in Sintra, but the open floor plan and arches that open up to the amazing gardens is a lovely place (lawn outside the palace a great place for a picnic).

  • Coach Museum in Belém
  • Prazeres Cemetery - at one end of Tram 28. There are some wonderful sculptures there. Rich people have some pretty impressive tombs and mausoleums.

I think you will be delighted by the Berardo Museu Art Deco (BMAD). This art deco museum is located in the Alcantara neighborhood, near the LX Factory. You need to get tickets on line.

Gail, do you mean the Coach Museum (like in horse and buggy?) I really liked my visit there in 2015.
