Lisbon area to stay and hotel suggestions please

Hello,
My daughter was recently selected for a travel grant and the opportunity to present at a conference late October in Torremolinos.
Since her boyfriend and bestie will be in class during the time, she asked if I wanted to travel with her.
We have never travelled to either Spain or Portugal and have limited time due to work schedules.

I just ordered the RS books and would appreciate suggestions for area to stay and hotels for Lisbon. (budget flexible – around 350 euros/night, quiet room with a comfortable bed).

We will be using public transportation.

Thank you!

28 Oct. flight from Malaga to Lisbon
2 Nov flight from Lisbon to SAN

Since you plan to use public transportation, I will recommend the "VIP Executive Éden Aparthotel".

Arriving from Lisbon Airport via metro is a breeze as the Restauradores Metro Station is steps from the front door of the hotel.

Most (all?) of the rooms have small kitchenettes, with a fridge, sink and (I think there was) a microwave, along with dishes and cutlery.

Although the hotel is on busy Restauradores Square, the windows have very good soundproofing. Once closed, I didn't hear a thing outside. However, if you like to sleep with the window open, then I would not consider it a "quiet room" as you will hear the rumble of buses going over the metal plates in the road.

With a budget of €350 a night, you have many, many options. Take a look at Booking.com in the neighborhoods of Baixa, Chiado and Príncipe Real. You will be spoiled for choice.

Many including RS in the Lisbon guide, recommend Baixa area for hotels. Many of the ones that I have found on booking.com that meet my requirements are in the Bairro Alto area. If I understand correctly, this is the top of the hill to the west of Baixa.

Will we have difficulty walking to restaurants and sites and using public transportation staying in Bairro Alto?
thank you!

I've stayed at The Emporium Suites in Lisbon many times. The rooms have kitchenettes and the hotel is in an excellent location.

In the Baixa area you can try My Story Hotel-Tejo. We booked it through Booking.com. There is another My Story a block away..

I was just in Lisbon last week and stayed at a Marriott property called MOXY that was accross the street from the Oriente bus/metro/train station. I know it's not the B&B type place in the RS guidebooks, but I am a Marriott guy and picked this place for several reasons. I also used public transportation and the Oriente station has it all and was literally accross the street. I also had a late flight arriving and an early flight leaving so the Oriente station is closer to the airport and worked well for that reason. Also, I had a day trip to Sintra planned and the train went directly from Oriente to Sintra so that was convienent. This area is in the RS guidebook and you will see there is a nice waterfront park and shopping mall with plenty of food options. The final reason I am glad I stayed there is because honestly, the Lisbon Metro system is not that great or should I say expansive. You have to link up metro and bus sometimes to get where you want to go. So being close to a metro station like Oriente worked out well for me.

We were in Portugal recently. We stayed in an apartment close to the Rossio train station for several reasons, but found it easy to walk around (even uphill very slowly). If you get tired or want to go somewhere else in the city, just use Uber. They are pretty cheap and we never had a problem getting one when we wanted. Also, we took a tuk tuk tour around Lisbon our first day just to get acquainted with the different neighborhoods and it was worth every penny. We went to beautiful overlooks and got a running narrative of the history and sites we were seeing.

Hi Jules,

We just left Lisbon this week and stayed 6 nights at Chiado Arty Flats at the edge of Chiado and Barrio Alto. We had seriously considered staying in the Baixa, but it was just a bit too touristy for us. After being there for 6 nights, I am really glad that we made the decision to stay where we did.

Yes, Chiado/Barrio Alto is on the hill, so when you want to go to the Baixa or Alfama, you need to either walk or take public transport or Uber. Walking downhill isn’t a problem and you can take a short-cut going uphill by taking the escalator inside the Baxia-Chiado metro or the Gloria elevator. Uber is inexpensive.

We loved our hotel, we had a studio with an outdoor patio, breakfast delivered daily to our room along with a Welcome bottle of wine. The owners gave us their What’s App so that we could contact them at any time with questions, including where to eat while we were on the road.

There are so many excellent restaurants and shops in the area, that outside going to the Alfama for Fado, we ate in the area. There is a mirador five minutes from the hotel and the Rossio train station is less than 10 minutes.

If you have any questions about the area, including restaurant recommendations, tours, etc, just send me a private message.
