Lisbon and Porto - where to stay

We are two couples and are looking for an apartment for 5 nights in Lisbon and 4 nights in Porto. We would love suggestions for which area(s) of each town to stay. One man had leg problems and can’t walk long distances so we want to stay in central areas. Thanks for any advice.

Cindy,

I don't usually stay in apartments, but I suspect there will be fewer apartments available in "central areas". Hopefully one of the others can provide more specific information. If you decide to switch to hotels, I can provide a couple of suggestions.

Actually, both Lisbon and Porto have seen huge increases in the number of vacation rentals. Not always welcomed by the locals, but owners can make so much money with vacation rentals, a lot of former long term rentals have been switched to short term. So, you should have a good selection to choose from.
In Lisbon, the Baixa area is flat and has good transportation - as does the Rossio area. Chiado and Bairro Alto will have many apartments but both areas are quite hilly. Alfama is also very hilly with minimal transportation options.
In Porto, the Rebeira area is likely the best as it’s right by the river. The second choice would be the Baixa/Se areas. Porto is also very hilly, so be prepared to navigate hills. There is a funicular right under the bridge in the Rebeira area that will save some climbing. And, taxis are quite inexpensive, especially if shared by two couples.

We are staying here soon; Ana Maria is very helpful: https://www.tripadvisor.ca/VacationRentalReview-g189158-d6360412-Lxtownhouse-Lisbon_Lisbon_District_Central_Portugal.html Close to tram.

We are staying here just outside of Porto with access to transportation into Porto: https://www.tripadvisor.ca/VacationRentalReview-g580268-d4468814-AFFORDABLE_LUXURY_BEACH_APARTMENT_SUPERB_SEA_VIEW-Vila_Nova_de_Gaia_Porto_District_Nor.html. Marcos is very helpful also!

Both offer parking!

Good luck,
Jean

We enjoyed the Fine Arts Guesthouse in Porto. Large rooms with a kitchenette and breakfast provided. It is not on the riverfront, but taxis abound and are reasonably priced. Stayed in the 2015 and are staying again this year.

The InPatio Guesthouse in Porto is the very best B&B that we have ever stayed in.
There are only five rooms, so book early
