Lisbon Alfama lodging

Hi all, I always choose Rick’s recommendations of places to stay but in Lisbon I think I would like to stay in the Alfama district it looks more interesting than the other areas but Rick has no recommendations there.

Does anyone know why and has anyone stayed there?

We are only in Lisbon 2 nights and was thinking the Rossio Square area but I’m not sure, yes easier to get around but truly a big city atmosphere.

Thanks for any help.

Lonely Planet Portugal guidebook lists several Alfama accommodations with a range of prices from hostel to boutique hotel. I met folks who had found airbnbs in Alfama and were very happy with them (but I have no details). Hilly streets and less convenient public transport may make other areas more popular, but there are hills in other districts too.

Thank you
Does anyone know why Rick has no recommendations?

We stayed at an Airbnb near the Fado museum. Look up Museu do Fado. It was within walking distance of the subway station [Santa Apolonia Estacio} and city buses. Easy connections to anywhere from there. It was a good place to stay. One negative, a four story walk up wthout an elevator is challenging for ould timers. Rossio Sqare is a good central location but is not in Alfama.

Remember that RS only chooses his favorites in hotels, locations etc. You should be able to find lots of reviews for most places you are looking at. Booking.com always has decent reviews. The Rossio area is a good one, but it’s not Alfama. One of the reasons for fewer recommendations is likely the, comparative, minimal amount of public transport, the age of most of the buildings and the hills. But, that’s just a guess.
