Lisbon/Alfama grocery stores

We're heading to Lisbon in a few weeks, and wanted to ask anyone who'd been there... we always like to stop in at the grocery stores in Europe for picnic/happy hour supplies to help stretch the travel budget. All the places we've found so far (in Alfama, near our air B&B) seem to be fairly tiny, mini-mart sort of affairs. And while we love supporting local mom&pop businesses, they look like they'd be a little difficult without speaking Portugese.

We'd love to hear anyone's experience with buying groceries in Lisbon- Thanks!

There is a good size Pingo Doce close to Alfama. It’s where the elevators are that go up to Alfama.

If you can’t find it, there should be no problem with communication in the mini markets in Alfama. Since it’s a highly touristy area, they will speak English. Also, after moving here, I obviously had to shop for groceries. I never had a problem even if I couldn’t understand the português. The staff would either show me the register or I would hand them my credit card…

Something we ran into in Tomar at a small grocery store we went to twice was being charged in dollars rather than Euros. Guess the cashier assumed since we were not Portuguese we’d want to be charged in dollars. Normally shopkeepers ask. This one didn’t. We didn’t make large purchases so the bad conversion rate didn’t amount to more than a couple dollars.

There is also a Pingo Doce at the Santa Apolonia train station. The entrance is next to the tracks. Both that location and the other location with the elevators have self-checkout kiosks with an English option. Just touch the flag icon and choose the British flag. You can tap to pay with your credit card. Couldn't be easier. The Santa Apolonia location is smaller than the other, but had everything I needed.

You can find the location of the larger Pingo Doce by searching on google maps. I was staying in the part of Alfama that was closer to the train station and cruise ship terminal, so the one at the train station was most convenient.

We were in an apartment so shopped at a local grocery, Pingo , almost daily in Lisbon. No Mini-marts. It will have the supplies you’re looking for plus make sure you pick up a bottle of Vino Verde or two, the local wine. We didn’t speak Portugese and never had any problems.

By chance have you considered googling, "Markets in Lisbon" (or anywhere else you happen to travel). There are a half dozen markets in the Lisbon area that offer fresh fruits, veggies, meats, cheeses as well as prepared meals.
