Most of the Lisbon hotel and hostel suggestions in Rick's Portugal book are around the central Baixa district.

Just returned from Lisbon/Evora. I stayed at the Eurostar hotel off the main blvd (Avenida da Liberdade). I found it to be quite convenient. As mentioned in Rick Steve's book, most hotels in the historical neighborhoods are older and not as comfortable. Most of the newer, more posh hotels are located north of the Rossio Square.

I really liked the location of the Eurostar hotel. It's very quiet and safe and the closest metro is only a short walk away. Lisbon is in fact quite compact in terms of all the points of interest. Most of them are within walking distance from the Liberty Avenue.

One other hotel I'd recommend is the Sofitel. It's right on the Avenue and stone throw away from the Metro station. The downside is the price. Prices of the newer hotels are higher than the ones located in the older neighborhoolds (Baxia, Alfama, etc).

Hope this helps!
