we will stop at Prata da Vitoria on a Trans Atlantic cruise in early November. What type transportation is avaialble from Prata da Vitoria to the lava pools near Biscoitos? Is there a place to change from street clothes to a swimming suit? Will will the water temperature be in early November?

Hi Jon,

Taxis should be waiting for the ship, but depending on how many passengers are getting off before you will determine if you can get one. If you are lucky, confirm with the driver when exactly to pick you up. There is not much in Biscoitos, and taxis will not be waiting there for a fare. Make sure you have euros, as taxis do not take credit cards. Uber does not exist in the Azores.

There are changing stalls and bathrooms with showers at the pools. Because of when you are visiting, they may not be open. There is a snack bar and a restaurant in the area if you need to change or use the restroom. These should be open in November during the day, but no guarantees. Sometimes the weather and water temp in November is favorable for swimming, sometimes not. Our family in the Azores sometimes swim in the ocean into December. For me it is too cold after September.

If the weather is iffy, and you can get a taxi, Angra do Heroismo is very nice. It should cost about 25 euros each way. You can grab a taxi back at Praça Velha, in from of the Camara Municipal (city hall).

Praia da Vitoria is also very walkable, but does not have nearly as much to see. Above the town is a statue, Imaculada Coraçao de Maria. There is a walking path up to it if you want a nice overlook of Praia.

Whether you go to Biscoitos or Angra do Heroismo, the ride could take 30 minutes each way. Give yourself plenty of extra time to get back to the ship.

Lastly, if you have the opportunity to eat Alcatra (an intense, savory/spicy beef meal cooked in a clay pot), by all means get it while in Terceira. Otherwise, plenty of seafood options should do the trick.

Have a great cruise!
