Late night Lisbon arrival logistics

We are arriving into Lisbon on a late night flight in September scheduled for 11:00 PM. I've been to Lisbon previously and picked up the metro at the airport and stayed at a hotel not far off one of the metro lines which worked well. I'll probably stay near the Oriente station on arrival night which was convenient.

I believe the metro closes at 1 AM. I don't recall the airport being very crowded at night, so I can probably get through customs and to the subway before 1 AM unless there is a huge backup or the domestic flight (I'll be arriving from LHR) is late. if things go wrong I guess I can always grab a taxi.

A couple question for those who frequent Lisbon and the airport.

1) What's your late night arrival experience at the airport in Lisbon.? crowded or sedate? Any issues getting a taxi at 12 or 1 AM?

2) Has anyone stayed at the TRYP at the airport? It looks like it is walking distance, but sometimes it can be impossible to walk from the airport to these airports. I looked at google maps and it looks like there are sidewalks and it is walkable. after a series of flights to Europe I usually try to make things as easy as possible on myself at arrival.

3) I've never taken a taxi in Lisbon that wasn't arranged by the hotel. Are they pretty honest from the Airport or do you have to worry about scam taxi's.

Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences.

I don’t think I’ve ever arrived quite that late, but can’t imagine not being able to get a taxi no matter what time it is. In fact, I’ve waited the longest for a taxi at about 10 pm. The company lisbontaxi.com will give you a quote and be waiting for you when you arrive, if you are that concerned.

You would likely be able to get to your hotel before the metro closes, but I’ve also had one experience when it took an extremely long time to get luggage.

After taking taxis in Lisbon for over two years, I’ve only had 1-2 experiences when I thought the taxi was taking a long route, etc.

Thanks for sharing your insights Kathryn,

Yes, I didn't really think it would be an issue. I've had a few times over the years where I have arrive at airports on what must have been the last flight before the airport closed and things were a bit deserted. But I wouldn't expect that at a major international airport, so I'm sure it will be fine.

I'm probably going to bet on the Metro. I travel light and don't check, so I can usually get through the airports pretty expediently.
