Last minute 5 day tip to Lisbon .... Suggested itinerary and tips?

Just booked a flight to Lisbon -- arriving Oct. 5 and leaving Oct. 9

Have never been to Portugal before.

Any suggestions for an itinerary? is it worth renting a car or using public transit to venture beyond the city for a day or more?

What about accommodations? I'm willing to pay more to be in a good location. Where would that be? Also, not sure if we can ask for specific recommendations in this forum, but are there any hotels or other accommodations you recommend?

I understand I'll be arriving on Republic Day and also that Oct. 8 is the day of the Lisbon marathon, which may mean roads and possibly other attractions are closed, so will have to work around that.

Thanks for any advice

Early October was a lovely time in Portugal when I went last year. I hope it will be for you, as well!

During some of my days, I followed the self-guided walks detailed in the Rick Steves Portugal guidebook.

I wrote a trip report that details:
1) my centrally located hotel (search for "Where I Stayed") and
2) the things I did during 4 of my 7 days (search "WHAT I DID: 8N Lisbon")

With the 3 days you have, I would think you could do most everything you wish by walking, perhaps a bit of public transit to tame distances within the city, and maybe a day trip beyond the city using public transit.
