Lamego, Portugal, 2-3 hour stop

We would like to stop in Lamego for a couple hours on our route from Viseu to Peso da Regua (Quinta do Tedo). We plan to see the cathedral and the Santuario de Nossa Senhora dos Remedios. We will have a car and it appears to be a smaller city. I do see parking marked on google, but would be interested in suggestions for the easier places to park and recommendations for other sites/views. I am also interested in thoughts on Lamego from people that have visited.

Seems you’re visiting the same places as we plan on seeing. For parking in Lamego I have the lot at 5100-081 Almacave, as being free. The only other places I have bookmarked to see there are the castle and Cisterna de Lamego. The latter looks like it might be nice for a couple photos

In the Duero area we may also stop at Railway Station Pinhão with its blue tiles. While in that area we’ll be staying at Parador Casa de Ínsua outside of Viseu. In Viseu, the parking lot at Av. Cap. Silva Pereira 24, 3500-208 is supposed to be free.

In Viseu we plan on seeing the Painel de Azulejos (blue tiled wall), city walls, Igreja da Misericórdia de Viseu (church of mercy), and the cathedral.

James, My sites are probably similar to yours because you kindly provided me with your Portugal notes! We seem to like the same things. I used your input for Spain, as well. What is your source for the free parking info?

We are staying at Parador Casa de Insua. It was on my radar from your notes. For brevity and because I was too lazy to look up the city that the Parador is in, I just said Viseu. We'll go there one of the days we are staying at the Parador. Thanks for the suggestions for Viseu.

Jules,
Just visited Lamego and it was a great three hours before driving on to Regua Museum that is only 15 minutes drive.

As you have a car, save your legs and drive to Santuario de Nossa Senhora dos Remedios with plenty of free park at the sanctuary, then drive down and park at the big free public park by "Centro Multiusos de Lamengo" as it is at the bottom of the steps up to Nossa Senhora steps on the one way drive down. This allows you to then do the Cathedral, and walk up to the castle. Note that Lamego Museum is closed for renovation but does have free toilets (only free photo exhibit at current time).

Would recommend the farm to table Casa da Rua for burgers and tapas on R de Almacave - was a great lunch find very popular with locals for good reason.

P.S. If you are staying in Viseu try to visit Aveiro and the Praia da Costa Nova on the coast. If you like the Santuario de Nossa Senhora dos Remedios, you would like Braga's Bom Jesus do Monte which is more spectacular.

Colin, so helpful! Thanks for sharing this, it will likely save us some time and anxiety. I'm tempted to share all the towns we are going to, for your hints. We are staying in Braga 3 nights. Top of the list is Bom Jesus and a trek into Guimares.
