Lagos, Portugal

I have an 8 day (on the ground) trip planned in September to Portugal. I'm planning to spend most of the time in Lisbon (with a day trip to Sintra), however I would like to take some photos of the rock formations in Lagos. Any tips on where to stay, how long ( is one night, two days enough? I live in Miami, so beaches are not a luxury to me), and do you recommend a particular boat tour?
Thanks,
Toni

I would suggest two nights in Lagos if all you want to see are rock formations. The ones around Lagos are spectacular, but to do them justice, you need a full day. If you train to the Algarve, it's easy but a four hour trip one way. Way too far IMO for only one night.
You will need a car or plan to spend money on taxis to get to Ponte da Piadade - which is the most spectacular. There are others that are a bit closer to town, but it will be hot and likely not close enough to walk.
I would just search for any hotel you like that still has rooms. The Algarve is very popular and I'm not certain when things slow down. Booking this late may significantly limit your options.

there are also several direct buses from Lisbon (Sete Rios bus terminal) to Lagos. They also take about 4 hours and aren't as spacious as a train seat but you don't have to transfer with your luggage as you would by train.

I can also add that for another view of the rock formations, we went for kayaking around Lagos and this experience was simply fabulous.
So you get to have pictures and views from the water as well as the ones you'll have walking on top of them.
You might also want to go up to Sagres and Cabo de Vicente west, as it is absolutly spectacular. You are in the most western and southern part of Portugal and it will give you great views and pictures
