Itinerary NOT Lisbon/Porto

We are a group of 4 friends in our 40s meeting for a 1-week trip in Portugal in early March. A couple of us have already seen the main sites in Porto and Lisbon, and so we’d like an itinerary that doesn’t feature those and goes to less busy places (though not too remote either). We want a more relaxing trip with some natural beauty, history, good food and wine, and hanging out. We’d like to have one base - two at most - where we can easily have meals and walk around to some things, but also maybe have easy day trips or walks from there. In short, this is less about seeing as many sights as possible, and more about enjoying the country slowly with friends.

Any advice about where to go? We are flying in and out of Lisbon. Also, from what we’ve read, we ruled out the Algarve due to weather and perhaps wanting something less resort-oriented. Would Sintra be too busy to feel relaxing as one base? What about spending the week in the Douro valley - is there more to do there than wine tours? Other ideas? Thank you!

Maybe Coimbra and Tomar. In addition to what the towns have to offer, there are plenty of places one can visit as day trips. Some possibilities include Alcobaca and Batalha monasteries, Fátima, Almourol castle, and Conimbriga Roman city.

For a quiet place to hang out, we spent a couple nights at the Parador of Casa de Ínsua and took a day trip to Lamego to climb the 600 steps up to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remédios.

We stayed 2 nights in Sintra and did not find it too busy, it quiets down at night as the daytrippers leave. That was a few years ago, but I would think in March would still be ok. I liked Sintra, as there are lots of sights. We also walked to a town close by ( I think was called Sao Pedro) and had great meals.
We also really enjoyed Evora, but I am not sure about the weather in March , and maybe a week would be too long.
What about Cascais?

Minho sounds really nice. I see that you can take the train to Braga from Lisbon. Would you recommend that - then renting a car in Braga - or just driving the whole way from Lisbon?

Any suggestions for which town or towns to use as a base for the week (we’d like 1, at most 2 places to stay to minimize stress).

Would it be too busy and too much driving to do both Minha and Douro valley (given our desire to take it easy?) Or is there enough to see in Minho area?

I like all of the suggestions other than Sintra. It’s become so crowded I don’t go over there from Cascais any more. Coimbra and Tomar would likely be my choice due to the already mentioned sites within day trip range.

If you want to do Sintra, Cascais would be less busy - and you could do Sintra, Ericeira, Mafra.

I don’t think there is enough in the Douro for a week unless you are really into wine. However, the Coa Valley could be reached fairly easily.

Another option would be the Alentejo with Evora as a base. There are a number of smaller towns plus wineries in that area.

Do some more research on the suggestions you’ve received, then decide. I don’t think you would be disappointed in any of them. But, be aware that March is still the rainy season so be prepared for showers.

An option is to take the train from Lisbon to Porto (Campanha) and pick up a car from the train station, Europcar or Avis counters are there. That's what we did prior to spending time in the Minho region.

Possible locations to stay in Minho are Braga, Guimaraes, Viano Do Castelo, and Ponte de Lima. We used Ponte de Lima as a base (summer), but it would depend on what size of town you would like. Ponte de Lima is small, but is close to Parque Nacional Peneda-Gerês and on the Portuguese Camino route.

Take a look at the Julie Dawn Fox blog for more information on the smaller towns.

We’ll be in Portugal in October. Besides Porto and Lisbon, we are basing ourselves in Tomar. I’ve checked the website Rome2rio and most other cities are no more than a one hour drive. Since it can take me one hour to drive 10 miles in Brooklyn, we figure we’ll be fine.

Well I thought Minho region sounded great, but my aunt told me they went to Porto in January and it rained the whole time, and the north is known for rain. We will be there the first week of March. We aren’t expecting summer time, but after a long winter, I think we’d all appreciate some sun and mild weather.

What is the early March weather like in Minho, specifically in terms of rain? Would it be better to stay near Cascais and/or Evora and Alentejo for more likely sun? What I read online says spring is shoulder season, but this will be very early spring. Thank you again
