Itinerary for 2 week vacation in Portugal

We’d like to visit Portugal for our 20th anniversary in December 2025 after Christmas. We love the water and other areas, nothing off limits. We are also open to driving. Any/all advice would be welcome! TYIA.

You really need to do some research to see what’s of interest to you. Other than walking along a beach, December isn’t a good beach time of year.

The more popular destinations are the Lisbon area and Porto. Other places frequently mentioned are Coimbra, Tomar, Braga, Cascais and the south coast, Evora, and Douro river area. Two weeks will go back faster than you think.

December is not beach weather in Portugal except for maybe walking on the beach as the first poster mentions.

What are your interests? Do you like cities, art, museums, churches, etc? I suggest you purchase a good guidebook or two to help you plan. Such as Rough Guides, Michelin Green Guides, Rick Steves, etc. Lonely Planet used to be my favorite, but I don't like their new format.

Lisbon is a wonderful city, not too large, and easy to see the sights. It is hilly but you can always take taxis if you don't want to walk up and down its hills. For sightseeing, there is the Gulbankien Art Museum, Coach Museum, Tiles Museum, Castle Sao Jorge, Jeronimos Monastery in Belem, Belem Torre, Discoverers Monument, and many more. We loved exploring the Alfama, the oldest district in Lisbon because it was not destroyed by the 1755 earthquake.

We also visited Sintra for a day, filled with castles, palaces, etc. Many people spend a night or two here.

We haven't been to other places yet in Portugal but I know from my research that Porto, Douro Valley, Tomar, Guimares, and Evora are very interesting and popular.

The Algarve is the area you want to visit PTs beaches whose latitude is 37 which is the same latitude as the US state Virginia. Would you like to stroll the beach in Virginia during the month of Dec? I suggest that you post-pone your anniversary celebration until the middle of May.
