Is the Algarve coast worth it?

I'm getting a lot of mixed signals on whether or not the Algarve coast is worth visiting. My husband and I plan on flying into Faro and only staying in that general region for 2 nights. The main reason we want to go is to do a kayaking tour of the Benagil Caves. Then we'll head north for Lisbon and such for an additional 9 days.

We're an active couple and this will be the start to our honeymoon.

Thoughts? Thank you!

Worth it in what sense?

My husband and I were just there last month. We enjoyed our time very much. We were there in October for three nights and it was pleasant to drive around and visit towns and beaches. I would not go there for the swimming as the beaches are actually pretty small. The rock formations are the real delight and the hiking is great.

We didn’t go kayaking so can’t comment on that. We did see people kayaking. I think what you have to realize is that it can be windy and then the kayaking could be cancelled.

Mt son and his fiance spent six nights in the Algarve. They flew from Porto. They were there in May and had a lovely time.

I think your answer has to do with how much you are trying to do in the time you have.

If you want to go, then it’s worth it.

Your question comes down to personal preference.

Between the Algarve and the north of Portugal (Porto and the Douro Valley), I would definitely go with the north.

Definitely worth visiting, if you have the time or it's a top priority.  Benagil can be tricky with crowding and closures.  It was closed all together at one point this spring/summer.  Not sure what the restrictions will be when you are there.  We liked walking on the boardwalks near Lagos, and also Cape Sagres.  I wanted to go to Benagil but our time was limited and it is nuts in the summer so we didn't.  If you like active things, kayaking in Benagil could be a nice way to add diversity to your trip.
