My husband and I are meeting a group of friends in Portugal in July 2025. I figured this might be our chance to see the Azores and/or Madeira too. My husband thinks I'm dreaming.
We've been to Europe many times and fly direct from Vancouver to a European hub and then transfer to our final location through London or Frankfurt. I think this time we're going to have to fly to Toronto and then the Azores (Ponta Delgada I think).
how many days is reasonable to experience a little of the Azores? How many islands? Is there anything at Ponta Delgada, or do we immediately need to go somewhere else?
I understand it's about a 3-4 hr flight to Lisbon from there, and there are no direct flights to Madeira. Likewise, Madeira seems to be about 3 hours from Lisbon. How much time is reasonable for Madeira? How does Madeira compare the the Azores?
Anything I should know about either of these places (such as they are extremely expensive, or all the hotels have ants, or whatever stands out)
I know some will say not to bother if I don't have at least 2 weeks to spend (that's what I was told when trying to plan Sicily, but I know people who have had great 4 day weekends there), and I actually don't know how much time we will have or want to spend. I'm at the early stages here.
