Is flying out of Faro Airport to connect with international flight a good option?

We are flying to Portugal for 2 plus weeks in September (14th-29th) 2023 from SFO. Planning this on the late side I know, but life got in the way. We are thinking of flying in to Porto and spending some time there, then on to Lisbon to visit friends and the capital and then down to the beaches in the Algarve area before flying home. I see that Faro has an airport close by. Would anyone recommend flying out of Faro? Or, should we double back to Lisbon? Appreciate any thoughts about this travel option.

Have you checked the flights out of Faro? If you’re going back to the US, I’m pretty certain the flight would come back to Lisbon before you catch a flight out of the country. But, I’ve never looked. Take a look so you can see connections, increase in cost etc. BTW, the train from the Algarve to Lisbon was €24 (round trip) the last time I checked.

I try not to double back on any travel itinerary. An extra hotel change or an extra train ride is a time waster, imo. Any butt time on a plane, train or automobile saved is more butt time to enjoy at a cafe, bar or restaurant. With all the potential train strikes in Portugal, one less train ride is one less chance for a problem.

We are visiting Portugal in September for the first time. We will be flying open jaw into Porto and out of Faro. For us, the price and flight time difference for open jaw compared to say a return flight to/from Lisbon was not substantial. Good luck.

Thanks for your words. We decided against flying in to Faro. We got a great airfare flying from California to Lisbon and back again.
