Hi. Amy and used our iPhone & google maps while we were in Tuscany a couple of years ago and it was wonderful. We ended up not using the nav system we paid so much for when we rented our car. Will we be able to do the same in Portugal? Thank you for any thoughts on this.

Yup! I used my iPhone and Google and had no problems. If you're going to some rural areas where cell signal is sketchy, download the maps in Google for offline use. I did this in Sardinia and Corsica last year and when signal dropped, it seamlessly switched from online to off and back again.

You can also add Maps.me to your iPhone. Download Portugal map (very small :) ). It works very well in Portugal. No need for any data transfer.
