In case of train strikes — other options?

We’ll be travelling to Portugal in October. In case of train strikes, do you have recommendations for how to get to the following places:

  • Lisbon to Sintra (and back)
  • Lisbon to Porto (staying in Porto for about 3 nights then returning the 4th day)

Driving is not an option, unless we are truly stranded. In that case, we might even have to hitchhike! LOL.

Take the bus to Porto, redeexpressos.pt
There are buses to Sintra but depending on your start location it requires transfers, it's time consuming and convoluted, take a taxi instead.

We took FLIX from Porto to Lisbon. I've used FLIX a few times in the past. Reliable, clean, good price.

We went to Sintra immediately when we arrived Portugal. We took the train, and it worked well, we were told at the info desk at the airport that it was not running. But, I double checked the cp website and a strike had not been called, so we decided to give it a try and took the metro to Oriente and the train was running. Our plan B had been the taxi, because bus to Sintra was convoluted.

@jules m, thank you. I will add Flix to my list of options for the Porto/Lisbon journey.

Another bus company is Gypsyy from Lisbon to Porto. It is quite nice and leaves from Cascais, Sintra and Lisbon Oriente.
Uber or Bolt would be my choice from Sintra to Lisbon. Bolt is used widely in Portugal and is a bit cheaper than Uber. You also know the cost before you get in the car instead of worrying about the taxi increasing in cost if you are stuck in traffic.

@kathrynj, thank you for the recommendations.

I had heard of Bolt but did wonder how it compares to Uber. Good to hear your thoughts on that.

This is my first international trip that I have ever written down notes on alternative transport in case of train strikes! And I’ve done a fair number of international travel.
