We are in Porto for two nights in April 2027 and already I have tried to look at hotels and Airbnb that have been recommended and they are not available for our dates. Is this the norm? A year and a half in advance?
It may be that it is too far ahead. Try looking at the same dates in 2026 to see if they are available then for info.
It did allow me to book that far on Expedia but not Booking.com and on Expedia it said it was not available.
More than 11-12 months ahead is often not possible. Besides, getting a good room is not that competitive, having a look next spring already gives you plenty of time!
We stay at hotels and book them shortly after booking flights. We try to book everything about six months in advance.
In late October we were staying in Porto for 6 nights. I reserved the apartment January. While we were there we decided to stay two additional nights. Our current apartment wasn’t available but I found the apartment next door was so I was able to reserve that one. I rented through different agencies and owners. I find that the best places book up fairly quickly, but you might get lucky waiting. It is far too early to be looking for something in April 2027.
We just booked a last minute trip to Lisbon for late February/early March. In our preferred hotel, all the room types but one were fully booked. Lucky, that’s the room type we want!
Six - eight months out sounds about right. I’ve certainly run into the problem of trying to book a hotel room 10-12 months out and bookings not being available yet.
Booking a hotel about 6 months out should be more than fine in Porto, except if you try to book Rick Steve’s recommended hotels. Both in 2023 and our trip this past September, we booked about 6 months out and many of his recommended hotels were not available. If your heart is set on the Rick Steves hotels, you can reach out to them directly (contact info is in the book or check their websites) to see when they take bookings if you want to book earlier.
