We have discovered a terrific online source for Porto,and she recommends staying in this neighbourhood for folks like us (older, it's pretty flat and arty). We would appreciate any recommendations for hotels in this area.

We stayed at Hotel NH Porto Jardim that I think it is in the area you’re referring to and we were pleased with it. We mostly chose it because we had a rental car and it has an on-site garage. It had a nice breakfast buffet and if you needed to do laundry, there’s a self service laundromat a 5 minutes walk from the hotel.
It is flat in the area and easy to walk around. We walked around the entire city from it and we are older.
