Hotels in Lisbon for a 24-year old woman alone

Would appreciate hotel recommendations for safe places for a 24-year old woman in good neighborhoods. Safety is the first concern, but also ease of access is important too. Thanks!

Have you considered Hostels? Portugal has some very nice hostels. In general I found the hotels in Lisbon to be a bit pricy. Rick even did a blog on one last year. I think was the Lisbon Destination Hostel.

What kind of safety problems are you anticipating in Lisbon? It is not a crime-ridden city full of gangs shooting at each other and men waiting behind every door to grab you. It is a civilized, safe city.

If nothing else, read reviews on Trip Advisor, Booking.com or HRS.com and see what people have said. Look at their locations, are they near where you want to be? You can also look at Google Earth to see what is around them.

The Portuguese are friendly, helpful and most of them speak English.

Thank you for your advice. I know that Portugal is a safe country and Lisbon a safe city. In general, not worried about the crime.

I prefer a hotel stay over a hostel stay for safety reasons: seeking a private bedroom and bath (rather than shared accommodations with strangers. (Plus, with a hotel stay one can comfortably go to one's room if one needs to work and not worry about being disturbed.)

So, if anyone has any hotel suggestions in good neighborhoods for one who is 24 years old, that would be much appreciated. Do people recommend staying in a particular neighborhood?

Not sure of your price range, but I stayed at My Story Hotel Tejo in October of last year. I put in a date for October of this year and looks like it about $150 a night. It is right around the corner from Rossio Square and close to the metro lines. Never felt unsafe coming and going at all hours, but like the others have said, Lisbon is a very safe city.

I completely understand your desire to stay at a hotel in a safe neighborhood as a woman traveling solo. I took a 3 week solo trip to Portugal and France this past January/February choosing hotels over Airbnb or hostels too this trip knowing I had 24-hour front desk staff watching out for me as I came and went. My favorite hotel the entire trip was Inspira Santa Marta in Lisbon. It was beautiful, close to metro stops, easy walking to attractions but most importantly the staff took wonderful care of me. I felt they really took me under their wing and kept an eye on me. When jet lag had me wide awake at 2am the first few nights , I’d stroll around the block. Unknown to me, they had the night security guard keeping an eye on me. I was on first name basis with everyone from the front desk, lounge and restaurant who were overwhelming kind offering suggestions, advice and checking up on me over the course of my first 4 nights there. It was so nice as a solo woman traveler to have great local people to talk to every day. So much so that I rearranged my travel plans to come back and spend my last night in Portugal with my new found friends. The hotel is beautiful too. I would highly recommend it. Check out my reviews (2) on TripAdvisor for Inspira Santa Marta. Have a great trip!

Thank you so much, thenosbigs!!!!!!! Yes, you understand that an Airbnb is fine and so is a hostel, but one just feels more secure in a hotel, especially when alone and a woman. I really appreciate the recommendation!

Thanks for your post, Priscilla. The request was for my daughter, who is now at the Lisbon airport on her way back to the States. She and a friend stayed in an Airbnb for several days, and when the friend left, she moved to a hotel. She ended up staying at the PortoBay Marques, kind of near her Airbnb. She got a very decent, low rate through Chase Saphire. I am waiting to hear how it was, but when she checked in, she said it looked great. She had been under the weather, so one of the things we were hoping was that the hotel would allow her a late checkout (as her flight isn't until this evening). Most places said absolutely not (unless she paid for an extra night). One place, that was quite a bit more (and recommended on this thread-- Inspira Santa Marta) said there was a fee of 30 Euros to stay after noon for up to three hours. The PortoBay Marques was not only quite a bit less per night than Inspira Santa Marta, but they also said they would try to accommodate a late checkout if they had the room. I'll be sure to post her feedback when she returns. Enjoy your trip!

Travelite,

Thanks for the update!

It would be great if your daughter would post a trip report.

Wishing your daughter a safe flight home 😉
