Hotel Suggestions in Lisbon

We will be visiting Portugal and Spain as part of a river cruise trip in Spring of 2017. We fly into Lisbon, and will be spending a few days there before starting the cruise. We can book the "pre-cruise package" through the cruise line, which has us staying at the Intercontinental Hotel in Lisbon. However, I'm looking into booking something on my own, which will give us more freedom to explore on our own and will likely be a lot cheaper.

Any hotel suggestions? I prefer something local, rather than just a chain hotel. Location is important, as we like to explore and will need to be within walking distance or convenient to public transportation.

Last year we stayed at Miraparque Hotel, which is located just north of Avenue Liberdade, where the pricey hotels and shopping are located, but not near the touristy areas at all, so a bit off the beaten path. I think it is locally owned, and by booking well in advance of our stay, I reserved a comfortable triple room, including a full hot buffet breakfast for 77 euros! The best deal I ever had in Europe! The hotel was quiet, directly across from a park, and felt safe. Check the website frequently, because the rates change. ((miraparque.com) The room had a small nook off the main bedroom for the third bed, and there was a modern, completely marble, spacious bathroom. What a deal! Furthermore, right around the corner was the metro, and across the street on the other side less than a 5 minute walk, was the bus stop, which took us directly to Belem. The cab fare from the airport to the hotel was 12 euros. We had a great stay.

A recommendation - if you like shrimp, you should go to Cervejaria Ramiro. The most unbelievable tiger prawns I ever had - a foot long! No exaggeration. Just go early, about 4:30-5:30 to beat the lines.

We have stayed at Residencial Florescente. It is on a pedestrian street within walking distance of metro, bus, train and many restaurants.

We flew into Lisbon on June 10th of this year after spending a week in very expensive London. We stayed at the "Hotel Lisboa Plaza" for several nights before starting a RS tour of Portugal. We paid 167E for a nice room with a very good breakfast buffet included. I would stay there again.

Have you tried www.booking.com? You can filter the listings by a variety of criteria. Lisbon has a lot of hotels at lower price points than the Intercontinental.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I will definitely check some websites as well, but I like to hear directly from people that have stayed at various places. I appreciate the ideas!
