My wife and I are visiting Portugal in late April and early May. We want to spend two days exploring Obidos, Alcobaca and Batalha. First, are two days sufficient to do justice to these stops? Second, what suggestions do you have for places to spend those two evenings? Nazare? We'd like walking distance to nice dinners. A view of the sunset over the ocean would be nice but not required. Are there any pousadas with character in this region? Many thanks, in advance, for insights. I enjoy reading the RS Forum posts from thoughtful and generous travelers. Tom, Marquette, MI
Hi Tom
I would suggest staying overnight in Obidos if you want to explore it. We found it to be busy in the day, but lovely in the evening as the day-trippers left. There is a Pousada in Obidos. I think 2 nights would be enough for those 3 places, if you stayed there. And there are plenty of restaurants, as well as shops with wine bars etc.
We also stayed in Nazare. I found Obidos prettier and a bit more charming, but the beach and sunset are of course lovely in Nazare.
You might want to check out Sao Martinho do Porto. It's between Nazare and Obidos with a lovely horseshoe beach. There are restaurants with good sunset views. We stayed there a week last May and really enjoyed it. We visited Batalha and Alcobaca from there - as well as Nazare and Obidos. It would definitely be quieter than either.
Many thanks. I will research both suggestions.
