Hiking in Lagos

On the recent Rick Steves radio program, there was a caller that asked about hiking in the Algarve. There were two answers: 1) An easy hike in Lagos-mostly paved 2) a hike in the Vincente reserve. I was wondering if anyone has more specific information about how to find these two hikes.

Thanks

Hi,

I'm not sure these are the same ones talked about on the Radio program, but Rick's Portugal guidebook lists an easy walk along the promenade in Lagos (p. 166 of Rick's 8th edition Portugal book). The tourist office has maps that show the route. Stretching north from Cabo S. Vicente, there is walk called the Rota Vicentina - http://en.rotavicentina.com/?lang=en. There are several routes - between Cabo S. Vicente and Porto Covo (along the coast) or Santago do Cacem (inland). You can do just a short section of either one as a day trip. The website has a "Trip Planner" where you can select walks by duration, starting and ending points.

I spent 16 days hiking on the Rota Vicentina in March. It was absolutely wonderful. If you want details on my trip, I can provide.
You did not say when you might be planning to hike, I would strongly recommend NOT doing this anytime after June.

I would highly recommend the Rota Vicentina because the trails are well marked and beautiful trails, people are incredibly nice, accommodations are affordable.

Thanks for the info. We will be there during the first week of June. We are staying near Burgau and are looking for some easy day hikes. We definitely want to see some of the Rota Vicentina.

Thanks again for responding.
