Hiking in Central Portugal

We are planning to drive from Douro Valley down to Evora and hoping to break up the 4 hour trip. Are there any sites recommended along the way or hikes to check out. Active family of three, have our own car, would prefer active over history lesson (we have a 9 year old with us) and don't mind paying admission or for a tour, etc.

Great question - I am also trying to figure this out. We are going the inverse direction..Evora to Douro Valley. It looks like there is a fairly large park on the way, Serra Da Estrela, with the highest mountains and peak at 6539’. It is challenging to plan exactly what to do however. Any input from others on the forum would be much appreciated!

Serra de Bucaso is a possibility. It’s a bit easier to access from the highways than Serra de Estrela.

Btw - the time estimates for driving here in Portugal are significantly shorter than the actuality. At least when I drive distances. If you are strictly on the toll roads, they might be more accurate. But, if you are any of the smaller roads, they tend to be two lane and winding.
