We are looking for any suggestions on the best way (airlines & city to fly out of) to get from either Porto or Lisbon to Maderia. Also, is there a charge for a RS size carryon (small) & a back pack?
We will be finishing up 13 days in Portugal in late April and early May and wanted to see Maderia for a few days.

Madeira is lovely, but you may have occasional rain. That's why the island is so green.
I agree with the sky scanner.com recommendation. I notice flights from Lisbon regularly that are very inexpensive. You would likely have more options flying out of Lisbon. The low budget airlines in Europe pretty consistently allow only one carry one. I would have my doubts you could take a small carry on plus back pack. Read the details of whichever airline you choose. I've been on several of the low budget airlines and they are all pretty comparable - very bare bones.
Your airline options will be easy to compare on the website recommended, but definitey look over baggage allowances on each airine website.
