Help FROM Obidos

We are in Obidos from Sept 16-19 would like to take a day tour tour to Lisbon or Sintra. What are my options? I would like to make the most of our short stay. We are arriving from Lagos by train to Lisbon. Then our plan is to take the bus to Obidos. My husband prefers not to stay on the city.

How did you get to Obidos? If you drove, then drive to those places. You are probably not likely to find a tour from Obidos.

We spent a few nights in Obidos and had a car. It is a very small town, very over touristed. You might find it better to stay in Sintra or Lisbon and visit Obidos.

"Even in the evening? I thought most tourists were daytrippers?"

Well... they thought the same.

By the way, Sinatra was a great singer! In my opinion. Sintra is a completely different thing. No singers there. Only monuments and great pastry.

From Óbidos, you can visit São Martinho do Porto (really nice, the bay is great), Foz do Arelho, Nazaré (visit Sítio, where our holly Lady stopped the horse of D. Fuas Roupinho), Alcobaça (the Monastery has an arm from the river that crosses the kitchet, with a net at the end, so they can have some fish), Caldas da Rainha (ask for the pottery... very interesting...).

Helena you are too funny! You caught my typo. I had been in Obidos years ago. I loved it but times have changed. My husband is not a city person. So we chose not to stay in Lisbon. You mentioned a number of places. A few I remember. Do I need a car or is there public transportation to these places. If I need a car can I rent one close to Obidos or must I rent a car from ie the Lisbon Airport. We are coming into Lisbon from Lagos via the train. My plan was to take the bus from Lisbon to Obidos. Then during the days I am in obidos go back into Lisbon for day tours. Usually I don’t bother with tours but we have so little time and my husband has not visited this area before. So there you have it. Wanting to make the most of a short stay. Do you have any more advice? Thank you

If you are staying in Obidos, my recollection was that it was about an hour drive by car. It looks like there is an express bus, but otherwise if you want flexibility with your times, you have a long bus ride. I think it would be nice to have a car to explore the area around Obidos, but I don't think I would want to drive the hour back and forth to see Lisbon.

I'm guessing you have your accommodations booked, but if not, have you considered a different small town that has faster access to Lisbon? We stayed a couple of nights in Sintra, which is a quick train ride. Or you could stay in Cascais which also has a nice town feel.
