Help - female solo traveler arriving Lisbon early AM

My 20-something daughter is arriving in Lisbon at 5:00AM. She had a promise of early check-in at her AirBB but was just notified that has been revised and she cannot check in until 3:00PM. Looking for suggestions on how to spend time safely with 2 pieces of luggage after a red-eye. She has never been to Portugal. She plans to Uber. She would prefer to stay in one area rather than roam.

There are lots of locations in Lisbon that will store her bags for a small fee, butkeeping her valuables with (ID,$) that's a long time to walk around with bags. She should also add Bolt; it's like Uber. We re just waiting to depart Faro for home and used Bolt frequently while we were in Lisbon last week.

I believe what Daisycan is referring to is something like this: https://www.nannybag.com/en/luggage-storage/lisbon. But there are a number of companies that operate similarly in Europe. They are typically small shops, hotels, restaurants etc. that make a few extra $$$ by keeping luggage for a fee. You just pick a time, a location, and storage time and a map shows you where available. We used in Paris easily. Nannybag in Lisbon shows 40 locations but not all may be open the time she needs.

Does the landlord have a suggestion about what to do with the luggage?

This is the luggage storage we used last year. In our case, after our flight, we took the metro to Rossio and left our luggage at the Praca da Figueira lockers. We had a few hours after an overnight flight before our train to Porto. Big landmark, so easy to find again and a great location to sight see for a few hours.

There's a Starbucks that's right by the Rossio train station that is great to get a bite to eat. They have local pastries. When one is jet lagged, it's nice to not have to think too much and just grab some coffee and food. And yes, for other posters, I'm aware that it's a bit taboo to recommend an American chain when Portugal has great coffee, but hey, after a red eye flight in an unfamiliar place, I think it's okay. That location is popular with a lot of younger folks who can speak English fluently, so it's an easy place to chat with others around you to get directions etc. if needed.

I know your daughter plans to Uber, but I'd recommend she also looks at the Metro (subway). It's very nicely laid out and a great way to get around. Take a look at the Viva Viagem card (zapping).

Amy,
Am I correct that you mean tomorrow?

When we arrived in Lisbon for the first time at 0530 we had the same problem. Our Airbnb allowed us to crash for a few hours at another of their (empty) flats. Another option is the Airbnb storing her luggage for her as she bides her time. Depending on where her flat is, she should have no problem finding enough to fill her time.

In case she does not know: to catch your Uber (or Bolt) at Lisbon you get your luggage and take the escalator UP to the ARRIVIAL level, exit via the nearest exit and walk across the street to a small pickup and drop-off lot (aka "kiss and fly"). That is where the driver will go.

You don’t specify when this will be, but if time permits it and she can cancel the AirBnB,
I’d suggest to consider booking a hotel instead.
The hotel will hold her luggage until her room is ready.

When I travel solo, I prefer staying in hotels, or B&Bs rather than apartments.

Good luck!

Thanks for all your responses. This has been helpful.

The host offered a locker for her to store her luggage if it’s “available”. It’s too late to cancel the whole reservation … she leaves tomorrow and is staying for a month. Thanks for sharing links to the other city lockers. That might be the route she chooses.

The tips about locating Uber at the airport and using metro were excellent. She actually switched to Bolt. She is city savvy and will definitely use the metro once she’s past jet lag.

I’ve shared all your links and screenshots.

Thank you again.

Amy,
I hope your daughter arrived safe and sound.
By now she’s probably getting acquainted with her new home away from home.

I hope she has time to take day/weekend trips during her one month stay.
