I think I might have used Lonely Planet Portugal, which I wanted for the mainland as well, on that trip. Note when searching, it's Madeira.

when do you plan on going and how many/days nights will you spend? are you watching when they open up europe to USA or do you live in europe? if you are USA, get an IDP (license translation) i9f renting a car

i absolutely loved madeira. it was a stop on our transatlantic cruise. we hired a private taxi with another couple from ship to share the 4 tour. took cable car to monte gardens, walked a bit to ride toboggan down, taxi met us at bottom since a walk to town. stopped at cafe for some appetizers and wine, walked thru some small streets to window shop and buy. wished we could spend more time there. took taxi to cruise ship in time for sailaway. it was a fabulous day. enjoy

I also stopped in Madeira during a cruise and fell completely in love with the island. We had an amazing eco-cultural tour with Hit the Road Tours. Would highly recommend them!

Try packthesuitcases.com. It’s not a guidebook per se but it is a blog with wonderful suggestions and quite amusing to read. I love the author’s sense of humor! From the menu go to “Destinations” and Then click “Portugal”. I was supposed to go to Madeira for Easter but had to cancel because of COVID. I am hoping to go next year.

Tom's Port Guides are free on the internet and excellent. Since so many transatlantic cruises stop(ped) there, he has one.
