Good Home Base to Visit Duoro Valley for 3 nights

Hello,

I will be traveling in June for 3 nights in the Douro Valley after spending time in Porto. I have found some lovely places to stay but not sure which is an ideal location. I really enjoy a place with the river views... our main goal is to soak up the beauty and wine. WIll do a boat tour as well... I read Pinhao and Lamago are important spots but just wondering how much is just those areas or if bascially its all the same just different wine and view. Any help or tips are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Pinhão is right on the river and you can do 2 hour boat trips from there. There are a number of wineries very close to town. You can easily access Pinhão by train. Pinhão is not a pretty town but I’ve enjoyed staying there a couple of times.
I don’t think Lamego is on the river, but haven’t been there. I’m just looking at a map.

Yes I noticed those things too. From what I read those are just the names I see but I wasn't really drawn to them. Is it just expected to be driving min 1-1/2 hours to get around or is it possible to find some wineries in the more beautiful areas?

The scenery along the river is lovely. It’s the towns (that I have seen) that aren’t that picturesque. When I’ve been in Pinhão, I’ve stayed outside of town at Quinta de la Rosa and it was lovely. The scenery from the Quinta is pretty spectacular. I would suggest not worrying so much about the town but rather where you are staying.

Okay thank you. I notice you are from Cascias? I have another post asking about this as a base to explore some beaches as we do not have enough time to make it all the way south. Would it be possible to get your recommendation on that? we have 3 nights after Douro Valley where we would like to relax by water and then 3 nights in Lisbon before we leave. Any thought is greatly appreciated. (We do have a car)
