My fiance and I are considering Algarve, Portugal for our Honeymoon. We are looking for a good base to take day trips and something less touristy (i understand most of the region will be filled with tourist in late june / early july) but perfer a good mix of culture, good food and wine, easy beach access and relaxation. We are flying into Lisbon and will head down to the Algarve after a couple of days. Any feedback will be much appreciated.
Rick's first choice is Salema, followed by Lagos, Cape Sagres, and Tavira. He calls the section between Lagos and Faro "the worst of the Algarve."
We have stayed in Quarteira which used to be less touristy than Albufeira. It's been a few years since we were threr and it has probably changed but you can check into it. There is easy beach access and also access to other towns for day trips. It is close to the Roman ruins of Vilamoura, the town of Tavira with its arcitecture and delicious tuna, or Silves with its castle and excavations, or further west Sagres whre Prince Henry the Navigator had his nautical school.
