Getting to Batalha & Alcobaca

Hey! I would like to go to Batalha & Alcobaca on an upcoming trip to Portugal. We will have an overnight in Coimbra on the way from Porto to Lisbon and we’re thinking of doing another overnight in Obidos hitting Batalha and Alcobaca on the way. The problem is, how to do the transit? I’m seeing three option:

  1. Daytrip.com is the most convenient, but costs the same as renting a car for the entire trip.
  2. Rent a car for part or all of the trip, but that would require me figuring out parking and constantly worrying about driving in unfamiliar places. 2.5. I was looking at renting from Coimbra, but autoeurope says that isn’t an option.
  3. Take a bus. The Rick Steves guidebook says the buses get off next to the Monastery in Batalha but google searches suggest that you have to get off one town over.

Has anyone done this? Any recommendations?

We had a rental car when we visited both places.

In Batalha we parked in a free lot at, R. do Infante Dom Fernando 9. It’s about a five minutes walk to the monastery.

In Alcobaca we parked in the large free lot, Parque de Estacionamento da Cova da Onça de Alcobaça, Av. dos Combatentes 2460. It too is a five minutes walk to the monastery.

Bookmark both places into Google maps and it will take you right to the lots.

I booked a car rental from Lisbon airport to Coimbra through AutoEurope, rental was with Enterprise. Try using autoeurope.eu website instead of .com. There is a hefty one-way drop fee but it was worth it to me to have the freedom and flexibility of a car.
