Getting from Sagres to Tomar

Best ways? Is there a train from Sagres? Or do we have to bus to Lagos? Is it affordable to get a driver? Thank you!!

The closest rail station to Sagres is Lagos. Sagres is reputedly the windiest place in Europe and having been there several times, I can believe it! It’s ok to visit for an hour, but I wouldn’t want to stay there, as I am not a surfer. I don’t recall seeing many buses there.

I always hire a car when visiting the Algarve as the public transport is poor. Googling this journey, it looks as though you will have to go via Lisbon if using public transport, be this bus or train. Driving is shorter as you can bypass Lisbon. I have never done it, but I cannot imagine that it will be cheap to hire a driver, as it’s a 5-6+ hour journey in each direction.

For bus schedules along the coast, see www.eva-bus.com and www.algarvebus.info. Train connections from Lagos to Tomar tend to require 7 hours, with at changes Tunes and Lisbon, www.cp.pt. There are only a couple of morning Lagos-Tunes-Lisbon train departures, so you might again compare bus schedules.
