Funchal transportation

We will be in Funchal April 16, 2023 [Sunday]. Although it is a bit hokey, we'd like to try the toboggan basket ride. The problem is getting back to Funchal. We don't want to make the 2 mile walk, even though it is downhill. We've read that taxis are available for the return trip but they charge US$ 25 [at least a year ago] now maybe 50. At that rate, the basket ride doesn't look so enticing. Any thoughts from any "basket riders" would be welcome.

hey hey Jon
happy holidays. it is not hokey at all. we did this years back on a transatlantic cruise. looks like it's a stop for a cruise you're doing.
are you on cruisecritic.com?
it's free and has lots of info. get into forums, your ship and date, see of the people cruising. we would post if people interested in sharing a private taxi/tour to split cost. compromised what we each wanted to see and driver gave info, or we let him/her plan the tour understanding pickup at cruise port and back before sail off. always worked wonders and we only wanted small group 4-6 people.
i found a taxi/tour and we booked for 6 hours, nun's valley, fantastic with awesome views, toboggan was last stop, was so so worth it. probably never see or do again. we bought picture at bottom, cheesy/hokey who cares, i love my picture. taxi met us at bottom of hill, stopped in city center for glass of wine, back to port.

look at the few tours they have with toboggan, check how long, cost, and most pick you up at bottom. some charge a pickup at cruise port E 4.50 PP (your decision)
if interested in the taxi tour we did with 8 people from ship, i'll have to look it up and send to you.
hope you do decide to ride them, it's crazy fast, wind blowing in your hair, fantastic drivers knowing what they are doing, maybe a scream or yell

And see if you can take the cable lift up to the baskets and church. Madeira is one of my favorite places on earth.
