Hello, focusing more specifically on Funchal, we are considering hotels in the Santa Maria district and Se district, and wondering if anyone can offer thoughts on the trade offs? As we understand it, the Santa Maria district is the old town, though Se district -- where more of the hotels are -- is also listed as historic as well as commercial. Appreciate insights from anyone with experience. Thank you!
I’ve stayed in Funchal many times.(My husband was born there)
There are many choices of hotels to choose from. Many along the “Hotel corridor” a short walk through the beautiful gardens overlooking the cruise port and a short walk down the road from the Cathedral (se) The main hotel in Santa Maria is the Porto Santa Maria right on the ocean front in the old town. Pros Beautiful hotel, cons could be noisy as it’s close to the main town. Walkable in a minute or two from the hotel lobby.
I personally enjoy the hotels between the Royal Savoy and the lido. There is a walkway along the ocean easily access from most of the hotels which is pedestrian friendly. Very Hilly in many places. This is Madeira!
I enjoyed The Pestana Carlton and the Eden Mar Hotel. A lot hotels are 4**** or above. The Se Boutique hotel is located very close to the Cathedral (not sure how close) but be aware of the bells tolling regularly!
Enjoy your visit. It’s beautiful.
