We rented a studio apartment in the old town in 2021 and liked the location. Casa Do Mercado by Heart of Funchal. We booked thru booking.com but you can also book direct. https://en.heartoffunchal.com/casadomercado
I'd recommend posting this on tripadvisor in addition to here. There's a larger volume of individuals posting there for Madeira.
