Hi, I am planning to drive from Porto to SanSebastian and after to Lyon.
I am planning to make a 1st stop in Burgos.
I just want to know which motorway (paying tolls) is best? I travelled some years ago and I remembered that I had to drive on roads not be motorways, and not very happy. I want to avoid driving again. So.
From searching on Gmaps, I see 2 choices
-leaving Porto on A3 to Guimaraes, Leon, Burgos
or
leaving Porto on A4 to Vila Real, Valladolid, Burgos

If it was my drive, I’d take the A4 route to Vila Real, Bragança, then Zamora. From there it won’t make much of a difference whether you head north to León then over to Burgos or go to Valladolid and Burgos. Both of your options are fine.
I do hope you intend on stopping to see places along the route since there are plenty of interesting small towns and it would be a shame just to drive past them. If you don’t intend on stopping anywhere, you may as well take a bus and save yourself a huge one way drop charge for dropping a vehicle in another country.
Personally, I enjoy taking many of the smaller roads since traffic is light and if you see something of interest it’s east to stop; unlike the motorways where you’d need to find an exit. One could easily spend a week driving between Porto and Burgos if making stops.
