Hello my daughter and I want to explore family roots in the Azores mid September 2018
How many islands can you see in 4 days- looking to experience local cuisine culture landscape
Then off to the Algarve region for architecture and coastline wondering if Tavira is a good choice
Plan is to hire guide with car for Islands staying at B&B
Hope to find public transportation on mainland
Appreciate any thoughts to alter, add or aborte stops
I sent a private message with many answers.
Much of the Algarve comprises purpose-built tourist resorts that are not renowned for their architecture - for this, you would be better off in Lisbon. Tavira has the most character of the towns on the Algarve, however the more dramatic coastline is at the opposite end of the Algarve around Sagres.
Hello @lenoxpandm,
As a Portuguese, I'm glad you're visiting us :)
Honestly, I think that four days won't be enough to visit more than 2 or 3 islands, and that's wishful thinking. For example, if you visit São Miguel island (the biggest island), you'll have to spend at least 2 days admiring the sights and going for some hikes; next I believe you should choose one of these two islands: Terceira or Pico... These two islands are listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites for different reasons.
In Algarve, I agree that Tavira is one of the best places to go even though Algarve is a very touristy region. As an alternative, you could visit Lisbon and go to Sintra in a day tour or go to Porto (both Lisbon and Porto have airports with direct flight from and to Azores).
I live in Porto so I'm a bit suspicious, but this city has a wonderful historic centre (UNESCO's World Heritage) that you can explore on foot, great gastronomy, amazing people, a great nightlife and much more! You can also go on a day trip and discover Douro Valley if you enjoy beautiful and unique landscapes...
No matter your decision, I hope you enjoy your time in Portugal ;)
