Flights from Porto to Frankfurt, compare TAP and Lufthansa

Trip planning for Portugal and comparing two airlines that I have never flown with- TAP and Lufthansa. I’m looking at flying from Frankfurt to Lisbon and then Porto to Frankfurt. Both airlines have a departure out of Porto leaving at 6:00 am and arriving in Frankfurt at 9:40 am. This portion of my 3 week trip is booked separately from the SEA>KEF>FRA portion-with 3 day stopover in Iceland. Going to try and stick with carryon only for most of the trip.

Lufthansa airfare is $237 and includes seat selection and carryon to 18 lbs and checked bag to 50 lbs, rebooking fee is $35+any fare difference. TAP is $195, but for the Lisbon section they charge $18 for seat selection and $44 for checked bag. Though, I probably won’t check any bag until my return FRA>KEF>SEA (IcelandAir) - I know of the checked baggage fee imposed by IcelandAir. So, my questions:

  1. What has been your experience with each airline by way of delays, comfort on plane, treatment when things go sideways?
  2. For that early departure out of Porto, how easy or difficult is it to get transport from central Porto to the airport? Taxi/Uber/shuttle readily available?
  3. Will you agree with me that I have enough time upon arrival in Frankfurt from Porto to then check in for my flight FRA>KEF>SEA on IcelandAir which departs at 2:05 pm? If not, explain please.

Thank you all in advance for your insight.

As far as I can tell, TAP does not fly between Porto and Frankfurt. So if both airlines have a departure the same time, the TAP flight will be a code share on a Lufthansa plane.

(3) If everything goes as planned, yes. But, things can go wrong, the risk of you being delayed enough to miss your flight home is probably very low. But it would mean you have to buy a new ticket. Are you willing to take that risk?

Hi Linda! Lufthansa will not likely check your bag through to your final destination, so that may help you make the decision to do carry on. More importantly, I would be surprised if Iceland Air honored any delay out of Porto on Lufthansa or TAP, you would be a no-show & lose the ticket value of your onward flight, as they aren't in the same air alliance. https://www.icelandair.com/about/our-partner-airlines/ Have you already booked your Iceland Air flights? (Of course you could get on-line & cancel / change your onward flights if you realized there's been weather / whatever delay out of Porto.) You will likely go through immigration in Frankfurt, sometimes there's no one there, but I've also waited up to 45 minutes. Have you checked if you're arriving at a remote gate (no idea, ask others), but that adds more time in transit. Perhaps a good reason to book Lufthansa as they're more likely to have a gate at the terminal. Good luck!!

No immigration in Frankfurt as all flights are within Schengen.

Hi Linda. A few years ago, I flew home from Europe, starting in Porto (my flight out was early but not 6am). I flew Iberia from Porto to Madrid and then Madrid-home. I had two hours (barely enough tme) but mine was all on one ticket. I think you have more than enough time making your proposed connection in Frankfurt.

The night before, I stayed at an airport hotel, the Park Hotel Porto. It's walking distance to the terminal. I took the commuter train the night before to the Park Hotel so that eliminated any morning worries about transport. I don't think it's such a terrible thing the spend the night in central Porto the night before and just get up crazy early, if that's easier for you, and take a taxi or shuttle or something. No idea what time the Porto airport opens, but I doubt you need to be there hours early anyway for a Schengen flight to Frankfurt anyway. Porto's is a small airport, easy to navigate.

IcelandAir flights have already been booked and I specifically wanted a 3 day stopover in Iceland.

Badger: correct, TAP is a code share with Lufthansa. I failed to notice that earlier. Also, So immigration will be in Iceland?

Sandancisco: yes, I will either carryon my bags the entire trip or check the bag in Frankfurt for onward journey to Seattle. I have not checked on location of gates at Frankfurt.

Andrew: I might do what you did and stay at a Porto airport hotel for my early flight out.

Gail: I too prefer 1 ticket but Iceland Air didn’t fly to Lisbon and the airfare was cheaper (with a stopover included) into Frankfurt. Oh, and apparently, I will arrive during the tail end of Octoberfest, so that’s a bonus. I have not been to Frankfurt since I was in 3rd grade. I also like to break up the long flight to Europe from Seattle.

There is a lot of time to think about this portion of the trip so I will ponder a bit.

Linda, I'm sure the connection time will be more than enough time, but it's always good to have contingency plans in place like figuring out how you could change your onward journey to Iceland if there's a delay en route to Frankfurt. Enjoy your trip!

I’m pretty certain both Luftansa and TAP are the same flight. If you look at the fine print, it will tell you ‘operated by’. I’ve been taking a TAP flight operated by Luftansa my last several flights. They have been TAP planes but I book through Luftansa. The advantage is that Luftansa is much easier to contact if/when there are problems. TAP is fine to fly but terrible if you have to contact them. The disadvantage is that Luftansa is usually a bit more expensive.
Uber in the Lisbon area as a feature that you can book rides ahead of time and it works well. You might want to check that out. Bolt is also big in Portugal. It uses the same drivers but is usually a bit cheaper. If you’re going to be using it while in Portugal, it might be worth downloading.
You should have no problem making your connection even needing to check in again. But, be aware that Frankfurt is a large airport so be prepared to walk!

Also, So immigration will be in Iceland?

Yes, you go though immigration when you cross the Schengen border.

Kathryn thanks for the Uber and Bolt suggestions. I use Lyft here in Seattle and have seen a Bolt bus here. So I think the Bolt App will be good to set up on my phone.

Badger, that is what I was thinking too - immigration in Iceland

Thanks to you all for the thoughts..I’m working on a rough itinerary breaking out my nights in Portugal and will post a separate thread.

Interesting, when I picked a random day in June, yes they are the same TAP flight, but the carry-on and personal item size and weight very by who you buy the ticket from (TAP is more liberal) and Lufthansa offers a lower fare service with no checked bag; but TAP's lowest class had a checked bag.

Good luck.

As for transportation to the airport, it is very easy to take the metro to the airport. I don't know how early it runs, but if you to sleep at the airport the last night, the metro seems like a good option.
