First Trip to Portugal - Itinerary Suggestions

We are flying on May 23 from Chicago to Lisbon and onto Porto, arriving 5/24, at 10:30 a.m. Our return flight is from Lisbon on May 30 at 12:30. We are seniors and our daughter is accompanying us on the trip. This is a short visit!

We are exploring Porto on day 1 and taking a Douro Valley 8-hour tour on day 2. The rest is a challenge as we want to travel back to Lisbon and see Fatima, a beach town, and suggested must-see sights.

What are your ideas and advice?

With such short time I would skip going to a beach town unless you just stop for lunch in one.

Unfortunately you don’t have many free days, so some of the suggested places (Evora, Estoril, Cascais), while nice to see if you have the time, are out of the way if going from Porto to Lisbon.

Having a vehicle would make things easier for not having to depend on public transportation schedules. If driving, near Fátima is Batalha monastery. Continuing toward Lisbon is the very typical beach town Nazaré. It will probably be very busy in late May with a lot of traffic congestion by the beach. Between it and Óbidos (good for a couple hours stop) is Alcobaca monastery. Óbidos isn’t very far from Lisbon.

In Fátima, in addition to the sanctuary, are the house of the children and the locations where the Angel of Peace and Mart appeared. Those other sites are a couple miles from the sanctuary.

Six nights is not a long time. And one day already set aside for the Douro Valley Tour. I suggest 3 nights in Porto and the 3 nights in Lisbon. You can easily fill up those days in those two wonderful cities. Adding all those so-called must see towns will be difficult if not unpleasant with your limited days. Perhaps one day trip from Lisbon. Good luck.
