First time visitors Porto and Lisbon

We are visiting Portugal for the first time in May 2023. We arrive in Porto on the morning of May 4th (Thursday) and depart for Lisbon on the 9th (Tuesday). We are planning to rent an apartment, in the Bolhao area for 5 nights. We will not have a car and plan to use public transportation. We enjoy walking and being involved with the people and the culture. We would like to do a day cruise on the Douro River plus port wine tasting. Is this too long of a visit for the first time in Porto? We plan to have 12- or 13-days total in Portugal before heading to Italy. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

I don’t think it’s too long but I’m a firm believer in not rushing from place to place. Five nights would give you time to visit the Douro. I would recommend a small group tour as they do the driving and take you to wineries, lunch and a short river cruise. It’s a great introduction to the Douro. If you run out of things to do, a day trip to Braga or Guimarães would be an option.

Thank you Kathrynj for your reply. We too do not like rushing from place to place. Looking forward to our visit.

A day trip to Braga to see Bom Jesus is not to be missed. I spent five nights in Porto, without even going to Lisbon. I also enjoy slow travel.

Kathryn, do you have a favorite day tour company you would recommend? I will also be in the Porto Douro area (mid-October 2023)
