Looking to spend a month in the Algarve. Looking at Lagos and Tavira. We like dining, walking/exploring the old
parts of town, beaches not necessary and I assume at that time of year too cold. Not sure about a car yet.
Planning on 3-4 days in Lisbon when we arrive, and probably would take a bus/train later in our stay to Porto and the Douro Valley/
.Does anyone have a suggestion as to which town would be be best suited for a months stay.

I stayed two weeks in Lagos a number of years ago and liked it. It’s large enough to have all the services, restaurants, etc. open and is quite nice with few people around. Tavira isn’t quite as large (just from observation), but should be large enough to not close down as a number of smaller towns do in winter.

Tavira would be closer to go into Spain to explore. Lagos is better situated to explore over to Sagres. Depends on your preference. I’m thinking either would be good.

Also, IMO, a car is really necessary but the driving is easy. If you just want to stay in either town, you might be ok without one.

Funny to read this since I was just looking at Airbnb apartments in the Algarve for the month of March. I've stayed there in both March and April and loved it. It was warm enough to wander and hike, but cool enough that there weren't crowds. I've stayed in Faro (not my favorite) as well as a few times in Lagos. I'll certainly stay in Lagos again and could see that as a base for a month or so, but this time I'd like to spend a little more time in Carvoeiro so I might do that for a week, then move on to Lagos. I've never had a car in the Algarve, but found using Bolt was quick and easy.
